Ashbourne

Anthony Hamilton Russell has long held the belief that the red wine that will one day define the South African wine landscape is Pinotage. That was clearly his motivation for producing the Ashbourne Pinotage when he founded Ashbourne back in 1996. The single vineyard wine comes from the beautiful clay-rich Bokkeveld shale on the farm to the east of Hamilton Russell Vineyards. The property is named after Anthony’s great, great grandfather Lord Ashbourne who was Lord Chancellor of Ireland in the late 1800’s. The Ashbourne Sandstone, the white wine partner to the Pinotage, is named after the quartzite Sandstone soils that the grapes used in this blend grow in.
