Ataraxia

Ataraxia was established in 2004, when Kevin and Hanli Grant and a few of their friends bought a 47 hectare farm in the Hemel-en-Aarde area. Kevin's winemaking journey started more than 30 years ago, he was the winemaker at a number of wine producers including Hamilton Russell where he spent a  decade producing award winning wines. He decided it was time to produce his own label – and so Ataraxia was born. Ataraxia means “a serene state of mind, free from worry and preoccupation” – an appealing concept for anyone, achieved by drinking excellent wine.Kevin places great importance on the soil and the terroir - he often feels that it would be more apt to describe himself as a soil farmer. Ataraxia's  singular focus on the farm is understanding and interpreting the soils and getting an accurate expression of that interpretation into the bottle. A number of different soil types are found on the farm derived from Table Mountain sandstone and Bokkeveld shale. Kevin has identified 14 different soil types on the farm which offer different nuances to be considered when choosing the best varietal to plant on a specific site.

LOCATION:
Situated below the dramatic, imposing peak of the Babylonstoren mountain range in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge lies the beautiful home of Ataraxia. Some of their vineyards are the most elevated in the  Hemel-en-Aarde area and this together with the close proximity of the Atlantic ocean offers Ataraxia a cool location giving rise to balanced, defined and elegant wines.
