Bartho Eksteen Meester Sauvignon Blanc

R190.00

Platter Wine Guide refers to Bartho as Monsieur Sauvignon blanc. Neil Pendock calls him the Sage of Sauvignon – very flattering, because Sauvignon blanc is decidedly his first love as a single varietal.

This wine is a true reflection of well-aged Sauvignon blanc.

Description

WINE OF ORIGIN: HEMEL-EN-AARDE VALLEY

Winemaker’s Notes:

Meester is one of five differently styled Sauvignon blancs from our stable and certainly the best quality/price value. This is the true reflection of our Hemel-en- Aarde Valley terroir and the style and quality you can expect from our area.  It is a wine with strong herbaceous fragrances, backed by fine minerality and fine ripe fruit (figs).

The Kiwis sometimes revere to, Sauvignon blanc, as a doughnut wine, a wine with a “hole” in the middle. The wine has a very pronounced nose, and long aftertaste, but the mid-palate can be short. By artfully adding a small percentage of wooded Semillon, which is characterized by its oily lanolin fattiness, the “hole” in the middle can be disguised, harsh acids can be tamed and it can add to the wines’ ageing potential.

We are outspoken ambassadors of ageing cool climate Sauvignon blanc and hold that it should not be touched in the year it was produced. The best wines from most of the devoted cool climate producers are bottled towards the end of the year that it was produced, and these wines are far too tight to drink in that same year. We recommend 2 or even more years of bottle ageing before consumption.
