TEAM:
Gordon has a degree in Economics but his passion for wine led him overseas to wine producing areas like France, California and New Zealand to learn as much as he could about winemaking. He took over as the winemaker in 1999. In 2004 Gordon met Nadia during harvest time while she was working at Hamilton Russell Vineyards. Nadia comes from generations of wine growers from Robertson. She has a degree in Oenology and Viticulture. They have had 15 harvests together and have proven that they work really well together. They believe in a natural approach – add as little as possible to the wine and try to get as much as possible from the grape – and this will produce the most interesting individual wine.
Bevan focuses on all aspects of the business from logistics, manufacturing to marketing and sales – and as he says he has “ done everything except actually make a bottle of wine”.
LOCATION:
Newton Johnson Vineyards are located in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation, 9kms along the R320 from Hermanus. The beautiful location nestled between the mountains is high enough to offer breathtaking views of the ocean and valley.
The soils in this appellation are characterised by mainly Table mountain sandstone-derived soils however on the Newton Johnson farm there are also areas of decomposed granite (quartz) and clay. These different soil types contribute to producing award-winning wines.
