Southern Right

“I didn’t think anyone would take a wine with an animal on the label seriously” says Anthony Hamilton Russell of the Southern Right label adorned with the same-named Whale that is so prolific in Hermanus’ Walker Bay for much of the year. When Anthony founded the farm and brand back in 1994 he remained true to his philosophy of producing only one red and one white per wine property. Back then he believed that Pinotage was the red and the logical white partner would be Chenin Blanc. Four years later (they grew Sauvignon Blanc just to have a back up plan) they felt that the Sauvignon Blanc stood out above the Chenin and that was when they decided that the white would be Sauvignon Blanc going forward. Wine Spectator recently voted the Southern Right Sauvignon Blanc into their top 100 wines of the year, so the choice by Anthony and the team was clearly justified! He believes that the wine from Southern Right does so well because of availability, excitement and value. Tuck into a bottle of either and you’ll understand why they hit the mark on all three points.
