Tesselaarsdal Wines

Berene Sauls started her unique wine journey at Hamilton Russell Vineyards when she was 19 years old. She was employed as an au pair to look after Anthony and Olive Hamilton Russell’s four children. Berene’s curiosity about the wine business and Anthony’s realisation that Berene’s skills were being wasted as an au pair led to her introduction to the wine industry. She worked in the office, started running the wine exports, spent time in the tasting room and cellar and learnt all aspects of running a wine business until 2014 when Anthony felt she had the potential to start her own wine label. He assisted her financially, gave her space in the Hamilton Russell cellar and supported her like a mentor.Berene has named her wine Tesselaarsdal to pay homage to the place where she grew up. She is a descendant of the slaves that were freed by Johannes Tesselaar in 1810 when he bequeathed his farmland to them.In 2019 Berene purchased 16,6 ha of land in Tesselaarsdal to further her dream of planting her own vineyards to make her wine. She is currently conducting soil and water analyses on the farm to decide where to plant her vineyards of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
