Bartho Eksteen

It is amazing how many family vineyards have wine and vines running through the family lineage and none more so than for Bartho Eksteen and his wonderful wine journey. His early ancestors settled in the Cape in 1702 and the family have remained in wine country ever since. Bartho’s grandfather was a winemaker in Franschhoek and had a major influence on his love for winemaking, a love that has left an indelible mark on winemaking in this region since 1993. Building a strong reputation for excellence through his multiple roles in and around The Walker Bay wine region with the likes of Wildekrans, Sumaridge, Raka and Hermanuspietersfontein, today brand Bartho Eksteen stands proudly alone and serves an adoring customer base very well. Bartho Eksteen makes a number of stunning wines but he has not been named the Sage of Sauvignon or Monsieur Sauvignon Blanc for nothing. With awards aplenty and a history of impeccable winemaking, Bartho Eksteen adds another feather to the cap of wine producers in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley. Bartho, and his wife, Sune, also share a passion for educating young up-and-coming winemakers about the world of wine through their academy, Wijnskool.

TEAM:
Bartho Eksteen places a massive emphasis on the family dynamic and this manifests in the team that he works with: his wife, Sune, runs the Mana eatery on the farm and both his son, Pieter Wilhelm  and daughter-in-law, Sol are firmly on their paths to becoming well established winemakers in their own right. They all form a critical role in enabling the Bartho Eksteen experience.

LOCATION:
Having relocated their farm to the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, along the R320, in 2015 they now make wine, serve food and even grow some grapes on this beautifully quaint yet totally authentic and rather charming farm, a mere 3kms from the R43 turnoff just outside Hermanus.
