Our Wine Journey.

We all have a wine journey in us, some of us just never get to start it. Many of us do. For some it is short-lived and for others, it’s an ongoing, ever-changing, winding, emotional, challenging, beautiful path down a never-ending road. We’re certainly on the latter. In the early part of our wine journey, in our youthful student days, the decision as to which wine would be enjoyed on any given occasion was perhaps a little less considered than it is today. But journeys are like that. They start somewhere and invariably lead you down a road less travelled. They develop into explorations with intrigue, back-alleys and sideshows. They surprise you and entertain you and some of the very best ones are those where the destinations and outcomes remain unknown until the very end, if ever at all.

Our meander, post student life, took us a little deeper into the unknown wine world where we began delving into a number of varietals, one of which was Chardonnay. Chardonnay continues to be the most sold white wine in the world today and while we initially veered away from it on our journey, it wasn’t long before a slightly more elegant road presented itself, inviting us to indulge once again. You see, our journey had taken us from the buzzing metropolis of Johannesburg to the tranquil, beautiful seaside town of Hermanus where the enchanting Hemel-en-Aarde wine region gets accolade upon accolade every year for the quality of the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that is produced here. We were in search of our own small wine farm somewhere in the Western Cape. It was a dream, a romantic one at that, but one inspired by some friends who had followed their own wine journey and developed a boutique wine farm in Tulbagh. In short, we eventually bought a farm in Tulbagh and moved there on a wing and a prayer. We’d been seduced by the romantic notion of creating our own small winery. Sanity kicked in fairly quickly and we discovered that we were somewhat out of our depth. We sold the farm and returned to Hermanus where we began to realize how deep our appreciation for the wines of this cool-climate region was. The longer we stayed and the more we explored, both the area and the multitude of incredible wines, the more we realized that we were and still are in a truly unique and world-class wine region and that our wine journey would continue to unfold. Our love for Chardonnay soon became a love for Sauvignon Blanc and then Chenin and Pinot Noir and Shiraz and MCC and on and on we can go. Our passion for the wine of this region materialized in us partnering with some like-minded, wine-loving friends and building The Wine Glass – a unique wine tasting venue where you can explore almost 100 wines by the glass, in horizontal tasting flights (6 wines, same cultivar and vintage but different producer) or by the bottle all from this region. Two and half years in and the timing was right to take our offering online and so The Wine Journey was born – a separate company that promotes the same beautiful wine region: if you can’t get here to taste the region’s wines we’ll bring the wine farms to you.

There are now more than 10,000 wine grape varieties in the world, each of them with a potential journey for anyone ready to engage. Exploring wine, much like exploring the world, holds the promise of what might be and intrigue, knowing you’ll never experience it all. The Wine Journey is not just about the journey to tasting new wines or finding new styles or creativity in a bottle or a glass but it is also about discovering new regions, new people, experiencing wine farms, meeting winemakers, soaking up beautiful scenery, listening to and telling stories, indulging in food, sharing with family and friends and creating lifelong memories. In many ways, our wine journey has only just begun. Jump aboard!
