Hemel-en-Aarde consists of three appellations based on their unique terroir.
Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is the closest to the cold Atlantic Ocean and has the lowest elevation. The iron and clay-rich soils are derived from Bokkeveld-shale. The Pinot Noirs from this area tend to have flavours and aromas of dark spice and savouriness and are the closest reflection of a true Burgundy example. Bouchard Finlayson and Hamilton Russell Vineyards fall within this appellation.
Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is located 4-8kms from the ocean. The mountains on either side of the valley channel the southerly winds keeping the climate cool. The soils comprise of Table Mountain Sandstone- derived soils and decomposed granite soils. The Pinot Noirs have flavours of dark fruit and earthiness with a lingering finish. Bosman, Newton Johnson and Restless River fall within this appellation.
Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge – Here Pinot excels with the highest altitude appellation vineyards, fresh maritime winds and predominantly 450 million-year-old Bokkeveld Shale-derived soils. Vines planted in this appellation are, mostly virus-free, creating healthy fruit that influences the quality of the wines. The Pinot Noirs in this appellation are the deepest, shiny, ruby-red with deep spices, brightness and floral energy. The wines from the Ridge have all the elegance, tension and intensity expected of this exceptional terroir. Creation, Domaine Des Dieux and La Vierge fall within this appellation
