Hamilton Russell Vineyards

Discovering Hamilton Russell Vineyards is like experiencing a piece of South African winemaking history. Hamilton Russell Vineyards was the first wine estate in the Hemel-en-Aarde region, largely due to the gumption and determination of Tim Hamilton Russell, an advertising executive who believed that the southern location and cool climate of the area would facilitate producing excellent wines. Tim was encouraged by his friend Dezso Pongracz (whose name was given to the well-known MCC, Pongracz) to look outside of conventional wine-making areas. Thanks to Tim’s foresight this region has developed into a world class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producing area. Tim bought the farm (a former sheep and wheat farm) in 1975 and the first wine they produced was a 1981 Pinot Noir. Ten years later, Tim’s son Anthony Hamilton Russell took over the business and reduced their varieties to focus solely on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In 1994 Anthony and his wife Olive purchased the family farm and conducted extensive soil research which identified 52 hectares of clay rich, shale -derived soils which is where all plantings have been focused. They continue to introduce innovative ideas to the way they treat the terroir, the vineyards and the winemaking process, while always being cognisant of protecting the environment and following sustainable practices. Hamilton Russell’s Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines are not only enjoyed locally but have a loyal international following and are available in restaurants and shops in over 50 countries worldwide.

LOCATION:
Hamilton Russell Vineyards are located in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley appellation, which is the most southerly appellation in the Hemel-en-Aarde area with its closest point being only 1,500m from the cold Atlantic Ocean. Anthony Hamilton Russell was instrumental in creating the 3 appellations in the Hemel-en-Aarde area. He felt that it was necessary for the future of wine in the area to identify that there are subtle differences in wines produced in the 3 areas as a result of the different micro-climates and soil types and therefore that they should be demarcated in accordance with their unique differences.
